There is SO much more to nutrition that just what you are putting in your mouth. In the nutrition field, there is A-LOT of information out there. Some of it is really important, and some of it is 100% useless. Below I’ve listed the cornerstones for good health to help you sort through this information.
When reading about these corner stones, it might be tempting to get overwhelmed. My suggestion is to read through them, and then pick one or two to focus on. These foundations work together flawlessly, and by improving one, you improve all of them. They were originally created by the Nutritional Therapy Association (the awesome-sauce school that I was certified through). For more information about NTA click here.
A Nutritious Diet That Works For You – There is no one size fits all diet. What works for my body isn’t necessarily going to work for yours. As long as you eat food the way nature intended, and pick the foods that are the most nutrient dense, your body will thank you.
Digestion – Even the healthiest diet isn’t going to benefit your body if you can’t digest what you’re eating! It’s hard to love the way you eat if your body becomes bogged down when you start eating more complex foods. Without improving your digestion, making lasting changes to your diet can be incredibly difficult.
Blood Sugar Regulation – When you are on a blood sugar roller coaster all day long, sugar cravings become the norm. By balancing your blood sugar, you are more in control of our appetite. Craving food is deflating, when your diet should be empowering. Knowing a few tips and tricks to balancing blood sugar can help quickly curb sugar cravings.
Healthy Fats – I’m SO glad the low-fat craze is over and done with. Fat makes your food taste good, and keeps you satisfied longer than carbohydrates. Many people feel better and lose weight when they start eating healthy fats. Some fats are incredibly unstable and get rancid when heated, so it’s important to know what fats are the best to cook with. It’s also important to understand the facts around Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s. These nutrients are essential, which means they must be obtained through the diet.
Mineral Balance – Ever tried a supplement that didn’t work? Confused by all the supplement suggestions out there? It is important to understand what minerals YOUR body needs. You can do yourself a lot of harm by taking a supplement you don’t need. A hair mineral analysis is a simple test so you know without any doubt what minerals your body is deficient in. Hydration – After you’ve digested your food – you need water to transport the nutrients to your cells and to remove toxins. It’s important to drink enough water without overdoing it. Blood sugar and mineral balance also affect hydration and many people are dehydrated even if they drink enough water!
These foundations are SO important, but it’s hard to get a clear understanding about all of them just by reading through blog posts. It took me a long, long time to piece together my understanding of each cornerstone. I wanted to take a quick second to let you in on an e-course that I’m launching TODAY! It’s a course that will totally change the way you think about food AND give you an in-depth understanding of these basic principles. I’m on a mission to change the way America (and beyond!) thinks about food and dieting. Your body is perfect and food is not an enemy.
