Making time for yourself is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes life is hectic and totally overwhelming. Make time for yourself anyway. There’s no reason not to take full advantage of opportunities like Valentine’s Day to treat yourself and your loved ones.
1) Drink Soda
Never thought you’d hear a health foodie say that did you? The soda I’m talking about is made from water kefir. Kefir is a probiotic powerhouse that is great for improving digestion – which we know is important so our body can make the most of all the nutritious food we are eating. The “grain” in kefir grains is not referring to any kind of wheat, rye, or barley, it is referring to the look of the grains. You could say that water kefir grains are “grainy.”
To make water kefir, you just add the grains and sugar to water. As the mixture cultures, the kefir grains eat away all of the sugar and leave behind a wide variety of probiotic strains. You can flavor your water kefir and make lemonade, cream soda, orange soda, or use it as the liquid base to a smoothie. Checks out this article from the Cultures for Health website for even more ideas. You can get my favorite brand of water kefir grains here.
2) Take a Magnesium Rich Bath
Magnesium is one mineral that many people are deficient in. While it’s best to get your body tested with a hair mineral analysis, our bodies use up magnesium stores very quickly under any kind of stress, so it’s a good idea to replenish our body frequently. Magnesium also helps relieve muscle cramping, PMS symptoms, and headaches. Magnesium has been a GAME CHANGER for my typically awful periods.
The good news is that magnesium can be absorbed quite effectively through the skin. One of my favorite ways to pamper myself and get more magnesium is by taking baths! Adding magnesium flakes or Epsom Salts is a wonderful relaxer that’s also good for your overall health. Magnesium flakes are a bit more potent, and it might be a good idea to work up to using a cup or two of magnesium flakes in your bath. A big dose of magnesium can create soft stool, so you’ll want to be careful not to give your body more than it can handle! If you don’t have time for a bath, foot soaks or magnesium rich lotions are another way to get more magnesium into your system! To make magnesium lotion, just dissolve the magnesium flakes into boiling water, and then add coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter. You can find an exact recipe here.
3) Uplift Someone Else
It is valentine’s day afterall. There’s something so empowering and uplifting about serving someone else. It comes with a knowing that you are making a difference in the unique way that only YOU can.
A lot of us spend a huge amount of time serving others – whether it’s our kids, our employer, our spouse, or our clients – I would say most of us live very service centered lives. We serve people so often that sometimes it can become mundane. A headache. This valentine’s day is a great time to really refocus on feeling the JOY of serving. Do something out of the norm to lift someone else, and do it with knowledge that you have something very special to offer the people around you.
